Common Problems and Solutions for PU Mold Silicone

PU mold silicone is a cost-effective and convenient soft mold material, widely used in the replication and manufacturing of molds in various industries, such as the gift industry, handicraft industry, and mold manufacturing industry. The product itself is easy to operate, with superior physical and chemical properties, and is economical, practical, and durable. However, in actual use, some human errors may reduce the performance of the mold silicone, leading to waste and causing unnecessary losses to manufacturers and individuals.
In summary, there are three main reasons for the quality problems of PU mold silicone molds:
First, the quality of the master mold directly determines the quality of the product to be replicated. It is hard to imagine that a problematic master mold can replicate the desired product. Generally, the master mold is required to be smooth and perfect. Hand-made master molds or directly using existing products as master molds usually require cleaning and polishing; some precision master molds need polishing. If the quality of the master mold is imperfect, the resulting mold surface will often be rough, textured, or even cause the mold to stick to the master mold. Of course, even a perfect master mold needs to be coated with a qualified release agent, and sometimes a release agent is needed. The processing of the master mold is the first step in mold making, directly affecting subsequent operations, so it is necessary to be careful and meticulous in the process of handling the master mold.
Second, and most importantly, is the selection of Products. If the Products used to make the mold have quality problems, no matter how good the mold-making operation or master mold processing is, it will be in vain. We choose silicone based on the specific situation of the product. To do it well requires a lot of practical experience. But we can still summarize a simple judgment standard. This standard is the relationship between the size, pattern, and silicone hardness of the product. Usually, for small-sized products (below), we choose low-hardness silicone; for larger-sized products (above), we choose high-hardness silicone to make the mold; but if the size is relatively large and the pattern is very fine, then when brushing the mold, the method of pasting fiber cloth needs to be used to increase the hardness of the mold, and sometimes an outer mold needs to be made to ensure that the product does not deform. Basically, the harder the silicone, the more brittle it is and the easier it is to break; the softer it is, the easier it is to deform and the less durable it is.
Third, and the easiest to overlook, is the issue of silicone oil. Silicone oil, as an additive for silicone, is almost ubiquitous because it can dilute the viscosity of silicone for easier mold making. Silicone oil is used in almost all applications related to silicone, but its side effects are equally powerful. Silicone oil will destroy the molecular weight of silicone, reducing its hardness while also reducing its physical and chemical properties. This manifests as the silicone becoming softer, less wear-resistant, more prone to deformation, and more susceptible to oxidation and corrosion, reducing the number of uses, and of course, the most direct consequence is increased production costs. Therefore, during the use of silicone, we must pay attention to the amount of silicone oil used and minimize its side effects.
The above three points are only some of the problems to be aware of when using PU mold silicone. In the process of using silicone, we also need to deal with the situation specifically and strictly follow the instructions for use.
